The procedure is to reduce the constriction that the enlarged prostate is impressing upon the urethra and causing incontience issue for the (for the most part) older man.

I took a look around the web and I ran across this interesting post:
http://drgomezsancha2.blogspot.com/2006/12/hps-in-action-in-big-prostate.html

Its from the blog of a Dr. Gomez Sancha in Spain.

Best

F

Adult Diapers; Staying Active, Coping, and Incontinence Control

Ten years ago you'd have never thought of this (or searched for it on the web), but here it is and you've got a problem you've got to deal with. Lets see if I can shed some light on it. For the record, its male urinary incontinence.

But this article isn't about information, its about how to cope.

The first thing to deal with is how you feel. Men have been raised to be in control, fix things and stay calm. Right now, you're angry and frustrated; angry and frustrated with time, your body, and maybe even yourself.

Look, I've done the research, spoken to doctors, read the research and the one thing I have to say is put a hard stop on beating yourself up. Its a treatable medical problem, and coping with this is easier than you thought.

Are you sitting down for this? Because the first thing I have to tell you is "adult diapers." As you look on the web you'll see the politically correct terms such as "adult undergarment" or "protective underwear." Whatever the name is, you need 'em and you need to stop denying the fact and step up to the plate.

Your plan now has to revolve around how exactly you step up to it.

Do you stroll into CVS where everyone knows you and plop down a 2 foot tall package of diapers at the cash register? You think you thought buying your wife's tampons was an issue, this one is right up there.

Or do you pick an on-line store who will deliver them to your door in discreet packaging in a long enough supply so it doesn't look like the weekly delivery of Hustler?

I pick getting a month's supply or more delivered to my door for a fraction of the price you'll get in any store (grocery or drugstore).

Reason #1: buying it at the drugstore is a pain -- the quantities are packaged to keep you coming back each week (not an option if discretion is the goal); you need it to the door and on the shelf when you need it.

Reason #2: you don't want to exhaust your supply and have to run out in distress to the drugstore. You want an online delivery setup that uses your "profile" to ensure that your supply is delivered to you before you need it -- but not too soon. That's not happening at the corner chain drugstore.

Reason #3: These puppies are not cheap. You probably don't clip coupons but you have other things you'll need to spend your money on like vacations, kids, grand kids, dates, a Lexus... Short story is you don't want to blow the savings on overpriced diapers. If you buy a bit more the prices drop and you have just enough when you need them without panicking every time you reach in the closet for "just one more."

When I talk to people there is one more "coping" challenge (that's pretty easy to overcome). What are these things, really? What is an "adult diaper?" We are not talking giant diapers with safety pins in them a la Baby Huey. These products are comfortable, they fit under your clothes and you really can get on with your life the way you want without anyone else knowing about your issue.

This is what blew me away, there is more than just "diapers" out there, there's a spectrum of what you need, when you need it available now. For example, there are pads for the tip of your penis to stop a nagging leaks without going right to the adult diaper and there are pull on briefs (that don't have the Velcro straps on the sides you're probably visualizing right now). There's a link to the right for a site that has photos of what's available

In short, coping with this is easy. Everyone I've spoken with recommends getting as up to speed on this as possible, working with your doctor to get to the root cause of this issue with your doctor. Regardless of your treatment path, you'll need diapers so pick quality adult diapers that don't leak, get them delivered to your home on your schedule to meet your needs, don't break the bank and live your life on your terms.

We've got a lot of information on men and male incontinence here. We've even done the research and found a great website for male incontinence products for all of this including disposable absorbent pads to protect your furniture and beds. There are a million sites out there, we just sifted through the crap so you can get on with your life.

Hopefully this was helpful and not too harsh. Life is harsher when you're in the dark and frustrated. As I mentioned earlier, if you're used to being in control, fixing things, and managing your environment; look into adult diapers as you deal with this change in your life.

Understanding Urinary Incontinence in Men Part One: Incontinence and Prostate Treatment

Background
Male urinary incontinence (“incontinence” for the purposes of this article) is the accidental leakage of urine that most men may experience as a result of prostate problems. It’s important to understand that while it presents itself more as men age, it is not an inevitable part of aging. Additionally men can experience nerve damage that can leads to incontinence.

Male Urinary Incontinence and the Prostate
What is the prostate? The prostate is a male gland about the size and shape of a walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder, where it adds fluid to semen before ejaculation.

The prostate gland commonly becomes enlarged as a man ages. As the prostate enlarges, it may squeeze the urethra. The bladder wall thickens and becomes irritated causing the bladder to begin to contract even when it contains only small amounts of urine resulting in more frequent urination.

This condition rarely presents itself, according to the National Institutes of Health, before age 40, but more than half of men in their sixties and up to 90 percent in their seventies and eighties have some symptoms. While the symptoms vary, the most common are:

Changes or problems with urination, such as a hesitant, interrupted, weak stream;

Urgency and leaking or dribbling;

More frequent urination, especially at night; and urge incontinence (leakage of large amounts of urine at unexpected times, including during sleep)

Problems with urination do not necessarily signal blockage caused by an enlarged prostate. Other changes associated with aging can cause urination problems.

Male Urinary Incontinence and Prostate Treatment
In some cases, patients will undergo surgery to remove the entire prostate gland; this may be recommended to treat prostate cancer. The surgery may lead to erection problems and incontinence, although new nerve-sparing procedures in the abdominal approach (along with lathroscopic surgical methods) may reduce the incidence of these side effects.

Another therapy, radiation, uses an x-ray machine to deliver radiation to the prostate gland. While this treatment is not painful, it can cause of bladder control as well as fatigue, skin redness and irritation, and other physical side effects.

An experimental therapy called HIFU (High Frequency Focused Ultrasound) exists that hasn’t yet bee been approved by the FDA but it holds promise based upon results in other regions of the world such as Europe, China, Japan, Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, and Latin America. Briefly, this procedure utilizes ultrasound that is highly focused into a small area, creating an intense heat of 176-212° F (which is lethal to prostate cancer tissue). Since ultrasound is non-ionizing (as opposed to ionizing in radiation), tissue in the entry and exit path of the HIFU beam is not injured.

No single treatment works for everyone. Treatment will depend on the type and severity of the problem, each patient's lifestyle, and their preferences, starting with the simpler treatment options.
